1. Gosho is Our Basis of Practice

The most important thing in practicing the Buddhist teachings is to follow and uphold the Buddha’s golden teachings, not the opinion of others.
- On Practicing the Buddha’s Teachings WND, 393 (Vol. 1 P102)

One should rely not upon the words of the bodhisattvas and teachers, but should heed what was established by the Buddha.
- How Those Initially Aspiring to the Way Can Attain Buddhahood through the Lotus Sutra WND, 872 (Vol. 6, P176)

One should accept what is clearly stated in the text of the sutras, but discard anything that cannot be supported by the text.
- Conversation between a Sage and an Unenlightened Man WND, 109 (Vol. 5 P65)

Followers of this school should engrave the teachings of the Gosho in their lives and thereby inherit the ultimate principles expounded by the master. Then, if they have any leisure time, they should inquire into the doctrine of the T’ien-t’ai school.
